To play the melody on the autoharp, you need to press different chords (top line in ALL CAPS) while strumming or plucking the area where the note (lower case) is.
If you don't know the melody, then in general, you must choose the closest note.
The /*\ notation means go up to the note indicated in place of the *
and the \*/ means go down to the *.
Think of them as notes inside an arrow.
For example, on the fist line, you'll drop down to the e (\e/)
and on the second line you'll go up to the e (/e\).
