Bringing in the Sheaves

by Knowles Shaw & George A. Minor

This song is a slow one in regular (4/4) time. It’s often sung around Thanksgiving. It uses the II chord in the most common place and manner but is definitely not a jazz tune (although it could be).

The verse and the chorus use the same chords but have slightly different melodies.

I / IV I | / / II V |

I / IV I | I / V I |

  1. Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
sowing in the noontide and the dewy eves.
Waiting for the harvest and the time of reaping,
we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.

ch: Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.
  2. Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze.
Bye and bye the harvest and the labor ended,
we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.
  3. Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master
though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves.
When our weeping's over, He will bid us welcome.
We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.

More Two Chord Songs

Here are a few other songs that have a two chord in them. These follow the “regular” chord progressions given earlier but have a II chord just before the V in the middle. Try them in various keys to see which ones sound good when you sing.
